I tapped my pencil against the corner of my desk and thought about my conversation with Jimmy Abernathy. Knowing someone supported me, had my back, and validated my thoughts on Light’s cause of death motivated me even more. My relationship with Bishop had improved, but it felt good to have someone else on my side too. I wouldn’t commit to trusting him one hundred percent, but it was close.

Bishop stormed into my cubby, and his red cheeks clued me in to his mood.

I dropped the pencil on my desk and raised my eyebrows. “Someone’s cranky.”

“Were you snooping on private conversations?”

“Excuse me?”

“Cochran just chewed my ass because you were snooping on the mayor’s wife talking to Kathi Blackberry.”

“Snooping is what kids do when they’re looking for hidden Christmas presents. I just happened to be in their vicinity and overheard them chatting. I wasn’t purposely trying to listen to their conversation.” My stomach tied itself into a knot as my temper rose.

“According to Cochran, someone saw you hovering near them pretending to be looking at your phone.”

“Who?” Dang, someone was a good observer. “Okay, fine, I might have paid attention to a quick conversation they had, but since it was about me, I think I’m justified. And according to what they said, I think—”

He cut me off. “Get your shit together, Ryder, or we’ll both be working security somewhere in Alpharetta.”

It was my turn to cut him off. Besides, I wasn’t in the mood for a lecture. “Lawton’s wife knows something about Light’s murder.”

His jaw dropped and he whispered “Fuck” under his breath. “Let’s go.”

I laid it out once we were secured behind the locked doors of Bishop’s Charger. “Blackberry warned her about me. Said if I kept digging, I’d hit gold. Lawton’s wife said she’d make sure I was taken care of.”

“Maybe she was upset because you were snooping?”

I rolled my eyes. “Why would Blackberry be concerned about me questioning Light’s death, and what does it have to do with Jessica Lawton?”

“Maybe she thinks we’re screwing with her Mary Kay business.” The sarcasm in his tone took me by surprise.

“Not we, me. You get a pass from them.”

“I told you to keep your nose out of this. Now Cochran’s on alert and he won’t leave us alone.”

“Again, not us, me. If you distance yourself from me, you’ll have an easier time getting some answers.”

“Ever think maybe I don’t have any questions about this? And even if I did, why would I put my head on a chopping block like that?”

“Because you’re a good detective, and you believe Troy Light deserves justice.”

He closed his eyes for a moment and exhaled. “What’re you suggesting?”

I had him. “Just a simple coffee get-together between two single residents of Hamby, Georgia.”

His eyes widened. “You want me to ask Blackberry out?”

“What other way can you get her talking without giving us away? And maybe it’ll get her off my back.”

“She might be easy, but she’s not stupid, and I’m not interested in dating anyone at the moment.”

“It’s coffee, not a date.
