I tapped my pencil against the corner of my desk and thought about my conversation with Jimmy Abernathy. Knowing someone supported me, had my back, and validated my thoughts on Lightâs cause of death motivated me even more. My relationship with Bishop had improved, but it felt good to have someone else on my side too. I wouldnât commit to trusting him one hundred percent, but it was close.
Bishop stormed into my cubby, and his red cheeks clued me in to his mood.
I dropped the pencil on my desk and raised my eyebrows. âSomeoneâs cranky.â
âWere you snooping on private conversations?â
âExcuse me?â
âCochran just chewed my ass because you were snooping on the mayorâs wife talking to Kathi Blackberry.â
âSnooping is what kids do when theyâre looking for hidden Christmas presents. I just happened to be in their vicinity and overheard them chatting. I wasnât purposely trying to listen to their conversation.â My stomach tied itself into a knot as my temper rose.
âAccording to Cochran, someone saw you hovering near them pretending to be looking at your phone.â
âWho?â Dang, someone was a good observer. âOkay, fine, I might have paid attention to a quick conversation they had, but since it was about me, I think Iâm justified. And according to what they said, I thinkââ
He cut me off. âGet your shit together, Ryder, or weâll both be working security somewhere in Alpharetta.â
It was my turn to cut him off. Besides, I wasnât in the mood for a lecture. âLawtonâs wife knows something about Lightâs murder.â
His jaw dropped and he whispered âFuckâ under his breath. âLetâs go.â
I laid it out once we were secured behind the locked doors of Bishopâs Charger. âBlackberry warned her about me. Said if I kept digging, Iâd hit gold. Lawtonâs wife said sheâd make sure I was taken care of.â
âMaybe she was upset because you were snooping?â
I rolled my eyes. âWhy would Blackberry be concerned about me questioning Lightâs death, and what does it have to do with Jessica Lawton?â
âMaybe she thinks weâre screwing with her Mary Kay business.â The sarcasm in his tone took me by surprise.
âNot we, me. You get a pass from them.â
âI told you to keep your nose out of this. Now Cochranâs on alert and he wonât leave us alone.â
âAgain, not us, me. If you distance yourself from me, youâll have an easier time getting some answers.â
âEver think maybe I donât have any questions about this? And even if I did, why would I put my head on a chopping block like that?â
âBecause youâre a good detective, and you believe Troy Light deserves justice.â
He closed his eyes for a moment and exhaled. âWhatâre you suggesting?â
I had him. âJust a simple coffee get-together between two single residents of Hamby, Georgia.â
His eyes widened. âYou want me to ask Blackberry out?â
âWhat other way can you get her talking without giving us away? And maybe itâll get her off my back.â
âShe might be easy, but sheâs not stupid, and Iâm not interested in dating anyone at the moment.â
âItâs coffee, not a date.
